We made the drive down to Congaree National Park for a day trip. It was June 2020, so everything was still pretty restricted because of COVID. The gift shop was closed when we got there, which was a bit of a bummer, but we were just happy to be out doing something.
The first thing we decided to do was go kayaking. We got the kayak in the water and started paddling down the river. It looked nice at first, but pretty quickly we realized there were way too many fallen trees in the water. We kept having to navigate around them and it was getting frustrating. I also spotted a baby alligator at one point but I kept that to myself until we got back to the car. Didn’t want to freak anyone out while we were still in the water.
After we gave up on the kayaking, we walked around the park for a while. We ended up walking through areas where they had done controlled burns. It was interesting to see what it looked like afterward. The boardwalk trail was closed, but there were still a few other trails open. We walked about 5 miles total and saw some cool wildlife.

It was a good day trip. The park was pretty quiet since everything was still shut down. We got some good exercise in and saw some parts of South Carolina we hadn’t been to before. Looking forward to going back when things are more open.
