Indiana Dunes
Indiana Dunes
We made it to Indiana Dunes National Park this morning after a rough night at the RV park. The people in the sites around us were partying until way too late and we barely got any sleep. But we’re here now and it’s nice to get out and stretch our legs.
West Beach
West Beach
Started our day at West Beach. The sand dunes are decent. Not quite what I expected but still nice to walk around. The beach was pretty quiet this morning which was a relief after last night. We walked along the shore for a bit.
West Beach has some dunes that rise over 100 feet above Lake Michigan. The area became a national park in 2019, though it was a national lakeshore before that. Interesting that they managed to preserve this area considering all the industry nearby.
The Pannes
A panne
Found some pannes while we were hiking. These are wetland areas between the dune ridges. They were kind of interesting to see. Just a different landscape mixed in with the sand.
Wildflowers and Birds
Tall Garden Phlox
Saw some Tall Garden Phlox growing near one of the trails. The purple stands out. There were a few patches of them scattered around.
American Goldfinch
Spotted this American Goldfinch on some grass near the trail. We saw a handful of them today flying around. They were nice to watch.
Barn Swallow
Got a shot of this Barn Swallow too. They move fast so I was glad to catch this one. They were swooping around all afternoon.
Wrapping Up
The park wasn’t the most impressive place we’ve visited but it was a good time hiking around and seeing what was there. Got some decent exercise in at least.
